Hands-on Fundraising

Updated: May 1, 2019

By: Ashley Driscoll

As a class we had come to the conclusion that we wanted to get our hand dirty and do some fundraising for the Nonprofit Future Chefs. We formed groups in class to decide what we thought we be the most effective ways to raise money. We came up with many different ideas, but narrowed it down to bake sales and a garage/food sale. We then had to make sure that these events were staffed and advised really well so that people would come and support our different fundraising events. We gave each student in the class a different job from bringing stuff to the sales, running the sales, to being a on adverting team. We set up a google docs so that everyone could see what time slots were open to help work and what everyone had volunteered to bring to make the sales a success.

As you can see in the picture above, we created signs for the bake sales. On these signs we had different images and details to explain about future chefs. These signs were also large and visually appealing to bring people over so that we over. We also had to be vocal and try to attract people to come over and hear about the cause and why we were doing it. We knew as college students not many people were known to carry around cash so we knew we had to have money sharing apps as option to pay and this would allow more people to come and donate to our cause. We realized this was very beneficial and made people more inclined to come and see what was happening along with the attract of $1 desserts for sale. Us being vocal also was a beneficial factor. It attracted many people not only to come and see the bake goods for that but to learn about Future Chefs. We had many people that just listened to what we had to say about Future Chefs and decided that they just wanted to be generous and donate and not want anything in return.

Besides the bake sale we had to put a lot of effect into the more of the bigger fundraising events which was the clothing and food sale. We created more posters and visual aids for this to try and get more people to come. With this being one the bigger events we had to make sure that most of the class was on board to be able to make this sale be a big success. We had donations from Future Chefs itself for items to be sold. We had some students bring in clothing. Others were known to bring in baked goods and drinks to be sold. Along with getting approval for us to hang the signs around campus. One the many ways that we got the word out about this event was the different posters that were not only posted around campus in the dinning halls. It was also seen to be posted in the Residence Halls. We had people in the class posting on social media. Below is seen to be a copy of the posters that people hung around campus. This took a lot of man power not only to advertise but to set up. We had to make sure that people were committed to coming to set up tables early. Bring all the items that needed to be sold early so that when people started to come, we were all prepared.

As a class we have put a lot of time and energy into these different fundraising events to help this organization. I feel that we are able to not only be hands on with looking at the different proposals. We are able to make a difference by finding different ways to fundraise and spread knowledge about the Future Chefs organization. I personally have enjoyed getting to know my classmates and becoming closing to them as we had worked together to creating these different events throughout the semester.
