Site Visit to Rosie's Place

By Courtney Delaney

Our class had the amazing opportunity to visit Rosie’s Place as our second site visit. Rosie’s place opened on Easter Sunday in 1974, filling a much needed void with the goal of providing a safe environment specifically for women to maintain dignity and regain a sense of security in their life. The name Rosie’s Place originated because they wanted to create a welcoming atmosphere. As we walked in, we felt that goal had been achieved. One thing that was particularly impressive was the information they offered, lining the walls in several different languages reaching everyone. We entered and were greeted with smiles and informative packets made for each of us (all 22!). As we looked in the packets and all around we saw just how vast their services are completely free of charge.

In such a short timespan we were able to witness some of the amazing work they are doing to address the opportunity divide. All of the little details they pay close attention to create an atmosphere where each woman can be loved and maintain their dignity. As we listened to Jessica and Jamie, we heard the passion they conveyed about the organization and the women they serve daily. As we took our tour we saw all of the amazing amenities and education programs. In addition, the other programs including art and activities held daily in their waiting room.

Overall the work being done at Rosie’s place is incredibly important to women who are homeless. They have over 2,000 volunteers and clearly their volunteers feel compelled to return. Whether you donate food or books, or simply show up to help one day - Rosie’s Place thrives because of the community involvement.
