I’ve always considered working for a nonprofit organization but I didn’t know much about them until I enrolled in Framingham States Nonprofit Giving course. My classmates and I are so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of a course that does such important work. In taking this class, my definition of philanthropy has sharpened. The class has offered a new perspective on the significant work nonprofit organizations do to address social problems. I have learned how to donate funds to local nonprofit organizations, write a Request for Proposal (RFP), assess and evaluate grant proposals, and what a site visits consist of.
I am now certain that I want to spend my future working for a nonprofit organization that addresses drug and alcohol recovery. As a future philanthropist it is so crucial that I work for an organization that is meaningfully connected to the people and community it works with. I want my future work environment to be one filled with passion and motivation. As learned in class, it is so important for employees and volunteers of nonprofit organizations to know the population of people they are serving. I want the work that I do with those who are struggling with substance use disorder to make a difference. The class has boosted my confidence and I truly do believe that in the near future I will have a lot to offer nonprofit organizations that are battling the opioid and heroin epidemic because my story is powerful and important to hear. So far, the course has presented me with so many positive opportunities. As a whole, the class has reassured me that it is possible for myself and many others to leave a positive imprint on the world. When one door closes; another one opens. The opportunity to change the world is around every corner.
I am extremely thankful for the Learning by Giving Foundation and Professor Ira Silver. Thank you both for providing students like myself with this life changing opportunity. Without the class, I am not sure that I would be as confident in my future self and future career.
