Narrowing our list of organizations to invite

By Ashley Sousa

In the previous week, we gave oral presentations. These were our pitches of organizations we would want to reach out to and have them apply for our grant. Each presentation lasted about four minutes each. Our pitches included various things such as general information, if we had a connection to the organization, why we chose this organization and, anything that stuck out to us that showed how they would benefit from our grant. Most of our classmates had personal stories to go along with their pitches that made it seem more realistic and their emotions made me want to pick their organization the most.

After giving our oral presentations of the nonprofit organizations we had to come to a conclusion. The following week we each made a list of our top 25 nonprofit organizations that we thought should apply for our grant. Narrowing the list from over 40 organizations was hard. Having to consider how each one helps our community and who we think would benefit the most. One of the hardest points to consider was how much work our classmates put inn for their pitches and how much each organization meant to them. Many emotions were tied to many organizations.

After we each picked our 25 organizations, Professor Silver made a chart of all the organizations that received a vote and how many individual votes they received. The chart shown which organizations were popular among the class and which class members get to invite the organizations they pitched earlier in the week. As we figured out what organizations we had to reach out to we all instantly started browsing for emails and phone numbers ready to get our application out to these nonprofits.

Now the fun begins and we get to email our organizations asking them to apply for our grant!
